I use µTorrent as my bittorrent client and have been screwing around with its RSS downloader for a while to have it automatically download TV programs. Well I finally cracked that nut and thought it might help a few others to share. Here are the steps I used:
- Grab your RSS feeds from TVRss.net, it does some auto-converting of Mininova feeds to point to torrent files that you’ll need. For example, here is my Daily Show Feed.
- Once you have added all the feeds you want to µTorrent, then you need to set filters up on the Favorites tab. This is where I got hung up at. I tried to use a wildcard telling it to bring in everything. For some reason, that did not work. So, I have a filter for each feed and if, for example, the feed is the daily show, my filter is *aily*. I also selected a directory for it to save files to and nothing else is marked (other than the text box which has the name of the feed I am working on).
When you first add these it will pull in everything, go ahead and delete what you don’t want and it should act semi-normally after that. If you hit the ? mark on the Favorites tab, it will state the shows that last qualify under that filter. Mine read “Too Many” instead of “N/A” which I had been getting. Also you may need to close the program and restart after adding these to kickstart the process. Any questions, feel free to leave a comment.
At first I thought ‘F’ing beautiful’. But then I realized this client is Windows only. Anyone know how to do this on a mac?
What client are you using on the mac? When I was doing torrenting, I was using Bits on Wheels, and I don’t remember it having any options; but that was a year ago….
I know Azureus, which I run on Linux, runs on OS X and it has a RSS Feed Scanner. That should be enough for a good start.
I got it working (I think) using Azureus. However, it seems that even with bandwidth throttled to a low level (25 or 50 KB/s) on the bittorrent client, it seems to overwhelm my network.
I am using a Linksys WRT54G with the DD-WRT firmware. At this point, I am not sure if this is an Azureus problem or a if the router is just overwhelmed by the amount of network activity. I suspect the latter, but this is really just my gut feeling at this point.
I have updated to the latest version of DD-WRT last night, but I haven’t had a chance to test it yet.
Anyone have thoughts on using Azureus on OS X (10.4.8 intel)? Any suggestions on OS X clients that support RSS? Overall, I don’t like the Azureus client, as it seems to be slow and unresponsive. It seems to hang ocassionally and it is a bear to kill the process. I am going to try Bitcomet this weekend as well.
The other reason I say ‘I think’ it is working is because the client hasn’t downloaded anything automatically yet. The RSS plugins I am using, seem to load the feed, and then grab any thing new that matches the filter rule. The only shows I wanted to download were ‘The Colbert Report’ and ‘The Daily Show’. Neither of these shows have been on this week. I’ll have to test a news program this weekend to give it a try.
