National Constitution Day - Today (with celebrations tomorrow) is National Constitution Day. Without detracting from National Singles Week, this is the most significant event this week. Where I work, they are having a seminar on the importance of the seperation of powers withing the Constitution which I am plan on attending. I am also reminded of this wonderful post on perspective and how politicians have lost theirs.
Also for the past few weeks, I have been really craving some civil disobedience to protest the treasonous actions of this executive branch. I think this may have something to due with my Netflix pics. V for Vendetta for obvious reasons got me stirred up but the one I am more deeply affected me was Judgment at Nuremberg. Set a few years past WWII, focusing on war crimes, etc; the movie also addressed the guilt the German people had and how the were coming to terms with Hitler’s atrocities. I am not one who compares Bush to Hitler, that is too inflammatory in any discussion and used only by those with no real rhetorical skills. But I do think there will a point in the near future where Americans are going to have to ask themselves what they did, while BuSh and Co legitimized torture, attempted to disregard Geneva conventions, and killed tens of thousands of Iraqis all in the name of security and stability. The Germans response, in the film, was often “We did not know” and then “What could we have done?”. Americans cannot honestly claim the first so we have to seek an answer to the second. I wish I could do more than vote. Perhaps two days before the election, on the Fifth of November.
