Heads up! This guy is about to head out for a 2-week vacation to Denver, CO. Wedding on July 2 of one of my favorite ladies at Breckenridge. I will be posting photos to my flickr site [leave a comment if you don’t have the URL] and hopefully some posting when I get the chance.
Today, out to Topeka or further and then Sunday onto Denver. Back in town on July 9. Kenechiwa bitches!
Holy shit, I was just sitting on my couch watching TV on my Media Center box. I keep VNC running as a service so I can connect to it from my other computer or from work. So I am watching a rerun of Everybody Loves Raymond, when I notice the MCE TV controls pop-up and the mouse appears and closes media center. At that point I notice the VNC system icon tray is black and realize someone has hacked my box (which should have been evident by that point). After the “hacker” closes the media center app, s/he disconnect from VNC.
I guess it is about time I take security seriously. I have always figured I was kind of immune because I don’t run unknown executables and my firewall should block out most things. But I guess some holes are big enough to drive a truck through. I solicit input from any of my computer geek friends out there; specifically on what I need to do so I can still have remote access but not have bored script kiddies running crazy go nuts on my home computers.
For shits and grins, here is a link to VNC and SSH setup.
I love to bitch about work. My boss is functionally retarded and makes more money than me and I am always having to clean up after him because he is, again, functionally retarded and does not know wtf he is doing. But today I did find out that I can wear shorts to work! Mid 90’s with tons of humidity, that just becomes a huge plus. Seriously when was the last time you had a job you could wear shorts to work at? I double rule!
Find Your Upper Range of Hearing - I have been told more than once I need my hearing checked. My upper range is around 14,000 hz; I get just a bit at that level. Kind of curious how everyone else can hear. Please post in the comments.
is getting all the attention. NPR Story and a write-up in the old grey lady. I caught some of the shows today while playing hookey from work. Funny stuff. Much better than most of the crap on the web.
Office 2007 Hype - A lot of good buzz for the next Office upgrade. I have cussed Word more times than I can count so this is exciting.
I watched A Prairie Home Companion on Saturday. I’ll give it a mixed review. I had some issues with Dangerous Woman character and her actions drove a lot of the plot. I did not hate the casting of Lindsay Lohan as much as I thought I would. She did OK with the material but putting her next to Meryl Streep really spotlights her flaws as an actress. By far the best part of the movie was John C. Reilly and Woody Harrelson in their last song, “Bad Jokes”. That is pretty much worth the price of admission.
One other thing I will add. We went to the Saturday matinee were probably 20 years younger than the average of the theater audience’s age. And one thing about old people is they have no hesitation with talking during a movie. Shouting out plot points about 10 minutes after they were revealed and I would guess many were repeating dialogue for the older and deafer members of the audience.
So I am a fan of Garrison Keillor and the radio show but this is a tough movie to recommend to non-fans. I would give it a 7 overall mainly due to some great acting and well-written dialogue.
So today I spent about an hour and a half looking for a place to recyle in town. We used to have an older woman who would recycle but she retired. I took it over and thought I had the whole gig outsourced to a former coworker who collects and cashes in for his church. I mentioned the cans had built up a couple of weeks ago to him and got no reaction. Hell, I am not going to beg the guy.
Anyway so I go into work on a Sunday and place the cans into a garbage bag (with much spillage) and end up with plenty that won’t fit so I put those in a box and head out. First stop only had bins to recycle cardboard (I’ll have to get to the douche that recommended that place). So then I head across the Street to the Wild Oats and the very friendly girl there calls her dad and asks where he recycled his stuff at. I thank her and head out to Stagecoach & I-30 to a scrap metal place that is closed. I am not looking for cash but I do want to get rid of the damn things. Right now I have a trash bag and box full of cans in the back seat of my car. Any town where it is this tough to recycle has some serious fucking management issues.
In the fall of 1996 I spent my student loans and bought my first computer. I smoking piece of hardware that was a P-150 mhz with 64 mb of RAM. I cannot remeber the vendor but I think they are no longer in business. A few months passed and I decided I need to get into this whole FPS game genre. I had played Doom a couple of times (and been nailed) so the decision came down to Quake (I think) or wait for the sequel of another popular FPS at the time. It looks like my pick may finally come out this year and a lot of gaming has passed while waiting for Duke Nukem Forever. I should probably be thankful, who knows how much cash I have saved in the meantime.

Draft Gore - I was wondering to myself this morning if there was a place online where I could do this. Think of it as a badly needed presidential reboot. Via
